The Burger Youth Leadership Conference was held in December last year from the 11th-17th. The 50 leaders stayed at The Burger’s Muizenberg beach house in Cape Town. This conference was an opportunity for young leaders with similar mindsets to come together and discuss a central theme that is both relevant and important to the future of our country. The theme of the 2015 conference was ‘the influence of the media on the development of our youth’ and was approached from social, economical and educational angles.
Only 25 boys and 25 girls were chosen out of the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape and Marco was the only person selected from East London! To be chosen you have to be able to speak Afrikaans fluently or understand it well enough. You also have to be one of the head prefects at your school. These leaders visited places like the V&A Waterfront, the Groote Kerk and Robben Island.
When I spoke to Marco he told me that this experience was so great because it motivated him for his matric year and broadened his perspective about the state of our country. He also had this to say: “I would encourage any of Beaconhurst’s future head prefects to apply to go to this conference as it is a journey they will never forget.”
